What is Cross the Sky?
Cross The Sky is a community theatre company for learning disabled and autistic adults. We are part of Barnsley Civic and have been their resident theatre company since 2015.
The company was originally formed by Mary Turner and Becky Newbould in 2002. The pair began to run creative sessions for autistic and learning-disabled adults in day centres across Barnsley. They quickly realised that there was a massive amount of creativity and talent to share, and so Cross The Sky Theatre Company was formed.
Every three years, the company, guided by our lead artists, write and devise a brand new piece of theatre, informed by the group’s own lived experiences of being disabled adults living in South Yorkshire. Our latest production is called Up in the Attic.
When we’re not developing or performing a new piece of theatre, you might find us practising our singing, or even taking part in someone else’s projects. We’re very lucky that we get invited to collaborate with other organisations. Most recently we worked with Mind the Gap and Ignite Imaginations.
Our group and the work we do is funded by membership fees and donations from some extremely kind organisations. In 2022, we were supported by Barnsley Civic, Creative Minds, the Better Barnsley Bond, TK Maxx Barnsley and The Corner Pin (Craft Union Pubs). Thank you to all for your support, and to everybody who bought a ticket to see us perform, or made a donation.
